ENS001 Schubert
Eine Kleine Trauermusik
Chamber Ensemble
The Eine Kleine Trauermusik of Franz Schubert was completed on 19 September 1813. It is scored for a wind nonet consisting of 2 Bb clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 2 horns in Eb, and 2 trombones (in tenor clef). At 46 measures, the work is somwhat short, but three repeated sections effectively double its length. Trauermusik opens with a horn duet followed by the horns alternating with the tutti, and ending with full tutti.

ENS002 Pezel
Twelve Sonatas
Brass Quintet
These twelve Sonatas are taken from Johann Pezel's (1639-1694) Hora Decima, a collection of works for wind instruments published in Leipzig, Germany, in 1670. These transcriptions for brass quintet (2 trumpets in C, F horn, and 2 trombones) by Donald Miller represent one of the first bodies of transcribed literature to made available for that ensemble. As written, the Sonatas are all fairly short, running from 40 to 80 measures in length, not counting repeated sections. They are cleanly printed, allowing the musician to insert his or her own ornamentation as desired. A Pezel Suite can easily be created by programming a set of contrasting Sonatas from within the collection.

16 Dances
Brass Quintet
The Fuenffstimmigte blasende Musik (5-Part Wind Music) is perhaps Johann Pezel's (1639-1694) most well known collection, having been transcribed for 5-part brass ensemble several times. This edition is the only one to offer all 16 Dances in one set, and for a lower price than other edition's combined multiple volumes. In transcribing this set for brass quintet (2 trumpets in C, F horn, and 2 trombones), Donald Miller has left the invidual parts clean, with no editorial markings. In this manner, performing musicians may add their own markings to create their own performances. Like the 12 Sonatas of Pezel, a Suite of Dances can easily be created by programming a selection from within the collection.

ENS004 Gabrieli
Canzon Noni Toni a12
Brass Duodectet
This transcription by Frederick Fennell of Gabrieli's Canzon Noni Toni in Twelve Voices utilizes three identical choirs. Each choir consists of a brass quartet comprised of 2 trumpets in Bb, F horn, and tenor trombone. The work is a classic example of the echo technique for which Gabrieli is so well known, with the three choirs echoing one another right from the outset. The work is in 4/2 and is 77 measures in length. It has been edited by Mr. Fennell for dynamics, articulations, and phrasing.

ENS005 Ewald
Quintet No. 1 for Brass, op.5
Russian born Victor Ewald (1860-1935) was not a musician by trade. Rather, he was an engineer who had music as his advocation. An amateur cellist and hornist, he wrote several brass quintets for the conical brasses common in his day. One presumes he took part in their performance as well. This edition of this popular work has been edited by Donald Miller from the original version (2 cornets, altohorn, tenorhorn, and tuba) for the modern brass quintet consisting of 2 Bb trumpets, F horn, trombone, and tuba. Set in three movements (Moderato-Adagio non troppo lento-Allegro moderato) the Quintet is a staple in the literature, requiring strong individual and ensemble performance skills.

ENS006 Moritz von Hessen
Intrada a 4 Cornetti
Trumpet Quartet
Moritz von Hessen (1572-1632) wrote this work for 4 cornetti. The "cornet" of Hessen's day was a wooden instrument much like a modern recorder, but with a cupped mouthpiece. It had a gentle yet clear tone, and because of its fingerhole construction, was fully chromatic. This edition, extracted from Das Erbe Deutscher Musik Landschaftsdenkmale Kurhessen, for modern brass trumpets is set in the key of F (G if performed on Bb trumpets). It has been edited for phrasing and dynamics by Donald Miller. Set in 4/2, the rhythms are easy to perform, and the range of the first part does not go above G top space. The fourth part is required to perform many low G's and one low F.

ENS007 David Borden
Fifteen Dialogues
Trumpet-Trombone Duo
The Fifteen Dialogues of David Borden, composed for Bb Trumpet - Tenor Trombone duo, have become a modern classic in the years since their initial publication in 1962. Each Dialogue is a self standing work which can be performed in concert alone. Several Dialogues can be performed together to create a larger work. All 15 are challenging for both musicians, and often utilize mixed meters, moderately extreme range, and tricky rhythms.

ENS008 Gottfried Reiche
24 New Quartets
Brass Quartet
This collection of quartets, Vierundzwanzig Neue Quatrcinia, by Gottfried Reiche has been transcribed by Donald Miller from the orginal instrumentation (1 zink and three trombones) to that of a modern brass quartet. Mr. Miller has provided substitute parts so that the collection may be performed with 1 trumpet-3 trombones; 2 trumpets-2 trombones; or trumpet, horn, and 2 trombones. The entire collection is comprised of sonatinas & fugues, each a self-standing musical work in and of itself. But, like much music of this time, a combination of several contrasting selections into a Reiche Suite can be created for concert performance.

ENS009 Johann Georg Christian Stoerl
6 Sonatas
Brass Quartet
This collection of quartets has been transcribed by Donald Miller from the orginal instrumentation (1 zink and three trombones) to that of a modern brass quartet. Mr. Miller has provided substitute parts so that the collection may be performed with 1 trumpet-3 trombones; 2 trumpets-2 trombones; or trumpet, horn, and 2 trombones. The trumpet parts call for C trumpet for trumpet 1, and Bb trumpet for trumpet 2. The transcriptions are all of medium difficulty, with the top trumpet occasionally ranging as high as concert B (1 ledger) above the staff. Although most of the writing for the bottom trombone part is in the staff, it should be performed on a trigger tenor or bass trombone to facilitate the occasional trigger note and several final low C's.

Sonata for Bass Trombone
Bass Trombone & Piano
The Sonata for Bass Trombone is one of the most popular works for this instrument*, written and first performed in 1962 at the Eastman School of Music. It is a tonal work set in three movements, "Allegro Non Troppo", "Andantino", and "Vivace". The outside movements display the versatility of the bass trombone with their use of technique and range, while remaining melodic. The middle (slow) movement displays the instrument's lyrical qualities. This work has been recorded by Jeff Reynolds, bass trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, on Crystal Records.
*A recent survey published in the Winter 1999 ITA Journal shows that the McCarty Sonata was the second most popular bass trombone solo performed, based on an analysis of faculty & student recital programs published since 1971.

Sonata for Bass Trombone & Strings
This is the full string version of the Sonata. The string accompaniment can be performed with as few as four players (standard string quartet of 2 violins, viola, cello), five players (string quartet plus double bass), or string orchestra by doubling of the parts. When purchased, a single copy of each string part is included as well as a full conductor's score. Additional parts may be purchased through your music dealer. Parts should never be photocopied, as this violates copyright law.

ENS015 Speer
Two Sonatas (Miller)
Brass Quintet
Daniel Speer, 1636-1707, who is perhaps better known today for his Sonata for Four Trombones, was a writer of many works for instrumental ensemble. These two Sonatas, taken from Das Erbe deutscher Music, v.14, have been set and edited for the moden brass quintet by Donald Miller. The preferred instrumentation is 203.00, but there is a horn substitute part to make the ensemble 213.00. Tuba could perform the bottom part instead of trombone. The two trumpets parts are in C, and have a combined range of f1 to a2. The first trombone part stays above the staff for both pieces, but never exceeds hi a1. The third trombone requires a trigger for only two notes (low D).

Two Sonatas (Miller)
Brass Quartet
Daniel Speer, 1636-1707, who is perhaps better known today for his Sonata for Four Trombones, was a writer of many works for instrumental ensemble. These two Sonatas, taken from Das Erbe deutscher Music, v.14, have been set and edited for moden brass quartet by Donald Miller. (They are different Sonatas from those in ENS015 above). The preferred instrumentation is 103.00, but there is a substitute trumpet part to make the ensemble 202.00. Although the bottom part could be performed on tuba, the octave is high enough to perhaps be inappropriate for such a substitution. The trumpets part (in C) ranges from g1 to a2. The first trombone part stays above the staff most of the time, ranging from g to a1. The third trombone does not requie a trigger, having a range of G to c1.

ENS017 Haugland
Rondo Breve
For Three Trumpets
Composed in 1965, Rondo Breve has become a popular trumpet trio, appearing on contest lists and recitals. The work is indeed short as the title implies, with all 82 bars in one movement. The combined range is compact (trumpet 1 ranges e1 to a2; trumpet 3 ranges a to d2) allowing this piece to be performed by both intermediate and advanced trumpeters. It is graded as a "3" on the New York list (out of a range of 1 to 6, 6 being the most difficult).

ENS018 Childs
Variations
Brass Quintet
The complete title is Variations sur une Chanson de Canotier. This is an original work, written in 1965 for the Montreal Brass Quintet. A true "Theme & Variations" setting, it is in seven movements (theme followed by six variations). Each of the variations are quite elaborate, making use of mixed meter, no meter, and contemporary performance techniques such as flutter tongue and wide range half-valve glisses. As such, this is a work for the advanced quintet that has strong ensemble skills (variation V alternates between 3/4 and "follow the leader" free meter).
