20th Century (1986). For trumpet in C and marimba. Part of the Wilder Duo series, written for Robert Levy, trumpet, and Gordon Stout, marimba. Muted Suggestions opens with a Harmon muted trumpet soliloquy, followed by a lengthy section where the trumpet and marimba are in constant rhythmic dialogue. The marimba then has a cadenza while the trumpet switches to a Whispa mute. When the trumpet re-enters, both players perform another lengthy section Tempo Giusto, where the marimba is in more of a motor accompaniment role. Finally, the trumpet comes out of the mutes and the marimba evolves out of the motor for a brief coda al fine. -cdp
