Bach, Johann Sebastian Fugue No 14 [Fugue 10 Variant] (Smim) Baroque. Can be performed as a quartet or quintet (with added tuba part). Although entitled "Fugue 14," this work is actually a variant of Fugue number 10. It is definitely not Fugue No 14, well known as the final, unfinished fugue from "The Art of the Fugue." This work has obtained the number "14" most likely as the reult of a publication error made some time after Bach's death. An early keyboard edition of Art of the Fugue, edited by Carl Czerny (1791-1857) included this Contrapunctus 10 Variation with the incorrect title of "Contrapunctus 14." This error was apparently copied in later keyboard editions, and finally in the titling of this edition when it was first released in 1959. Regardless of its pedigree, this work is solid and substantial, and as a variant of Fugue 10, employs all the features of the other fugues of the published collection. This transcription has been transposed down a whole step to C minor. For two trumpets and two trombones, with an optional tuba part. The tuba part largely doubles Trombone II in selected locations. -cdp
