Small, Charlie Conversation for Tenor & Bass Trombone
20th Century. For tenor and bass trombone. Written
in 1976, this duet has become a standard in the
recital repertoire. Originally composed for
Charles Small and David Taylor, the piece offers
the opportunity to explore an intimate dialogue
between the players. -vk
This re-engraved 2016 edition features numerous
adjustments made by the composer to bring the
published scores into compliance with his original
ideas. In addition to corrected and neatened
notation, the parts are now a set of two-sheet
scores for ease of performance (no more page
turns). The work as now published is the most
authentic version available. Includes score and
parts. -cdp
"Conversation is a national pastime. Whether it is
spouses arguing in the
kitchen, kids on the playground yelling at each
other, debaters questioning
their opponent's qualifi cations, and many other
conversational situations.
Recently I had the opportunity to see a great
movie, Indignation. In a moving scene, a young
freshman has a contentious meeting with the dean
of
the college. I couldn't help comparing the tension
of the two characters, the same kind of tension
and emotional discourse that I tried to depict in
my composition. The duet between a tenor and bass
trombone goes through many disputes, eventually
resolving in a harmonious resolution." -Charles
Small
