Faulconer Stompee, The
20th Century (1980). For 8 trombones, drums and
bass Composed for the University of Oklahoma
Trombone Choir, this work is an interesting piece
in a contemporary "rock" style and based on the
medieval Estampee dance.
The Stompee is based on the first phrase of
"Kalenda Maya" by Raimbault de Vaqueiras (d.
1207). The melody is an example of an Estampie
reportedly performed by two "joglar de Fransa"
(jongleurs from northern France) on Voils at the
Court of Montferrat around the turn of the 13th
century. The complete melody may be found in the
Historical Anthology of Music, edited by Davison
and Apel, ex. 18d, page 16.
The fanfare-like opening and insuing introduction
function to "call" the melody from antiquity. It
is then manipulated to become the melodic basis of
the piece through fragmentation and very intact
presentation. Then, the quite open-fifth ending
allows the melody to return to the past, heard
only in the minds of those able to hear it.
